Sookmyung Women’s University’s Global Language and Culture Institute, ‘Lingua Express’, hosted the ‘2017 Summer Language and Culture Camp’ for students aspiring to learn English and study Korean culture.  One participant, Evgeniia (age 15) said, “The main reason I registered for this camp was to study English, but I also wanted to learn about Korean culture.  It has been interesting.”  Participants ranged in age and grade levels. Most of them were Russian but there were several from Kazakhstan.  On July 25, 2017, campers gathered at Gemma Hall to learn about Hanbok, Korean traditional clothing. Everything was explained to campers in Korean, but a translator was there to help by translating the information into Russian.  Campers learned about the different meanings behind colors of Hanbok and how to correctly wear it, politely bow, and do ‘gongsu’.  After the lecture about Hanbok, campers were given the opportunity to try on Hanbok themselves.  Most of the participants were in awe at the beauty of the Hanbok costumes, so it was quite common to see them taking selfies or group photos with others in the clothing. Evgeniia said, “Nothing about the camp is disappointing.  Everything has been amazing.  Hanbok is beautiful as well.”  The camp’s Hanbok event went off without a hitch, and at the end of the camp all campers posed for a group photo wearing Hanbok.
