As exams approach, you might be searching for good places to get rid of stress. One such place SMT would like to introduce to you is a place full of lights and digital images. Lights sparkle amongst each other and digital images are lively shown all about the room. It appears as though digital art videos are being shown in your own personal small cinema. Does this place sound familiar? If not, it’s ‘TeamLab World’, a wondrous place for your imagination to come alive that soothes you into relaxation, and lets your day proceed perfectly. SMT reporter visited ‘TeamLab World’ to discover and learn more about its appeal.
TeamLab: Ultra Technologists
TeamLab World is a museum that exhibits digital art content created by TeamLab, an art collective group formed in 2001. Besides artisans, the group is comprised of engineers, mathematicians, designers, editors, programmers, and so on. They refer to themselves as ‘ultra-technologists’ whose aim is to balance art, science, technology, and creativity. ‘TeamLab World’ was the recipient of the prestigious ‘Top 10 art exhibitions of 2016’, an award by design boom. At TeamLab World, visitors are taken into a marvelous world of beautiful digital images that continuously move and change. The images are so unique and the digital arts are so well-balanced among the four aforesaid elements that all guests to the museum soon realize why TeamLab call themselves ‘ultra-technologists’.
TeamLab believes that digital technology will expand art as it allows creativity to flow more freely, which at the same time, better expresses an individual’s creative expressions. Lotte World hosts the works of TeamLab to inspire imagination and creativity with the help of digital arts. The easiest way to go to TeamLab World from Sookmyung Women’s University is to take subway line number 4, transfer to line number 2 at Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station, and get off at Jamsil Station. Since TeamLab World is located inside Lotte World, it is easy to locate once inside the amusement park.
Where Imagination and Creativity Grows
TeamLab World has two main sections: ‘Art World’ and ‘Future Park’. Art world is a place where guests can experience art firsthand. Guests participate and are immersed in the arts. In Art World, there is a section entitled ‘Flowers and People, Cannot be Controlled but Live Together – A Whole Year per Year’. In this section, flowers bud, grow, bloom, wilt, and die. The digital art here highlights the life cycle of a flower. The section is filled with digital flower images all over the walls. Visitors that find a spot in the section vacant of flowers only need to stand for a short minute before flowers suddenly will start growing up alongside their shoes. The sight of flowers blooming at your feet is not only beautiful, but it is sure to amaze you as well. However, soon the life of those flowers will fade and the flowers will die when the person steps out from their standing position. In other words, the flowers react to the movement of people in the section. The artwork illustrates humans’ connection to nature and how a flower’s ecosystem is influenced by human intervention. In ‘Crystal Universe’, another section in Art World, beams of light sparkle in a three-dimensional light space. The light can be controlled by visitors with their smartphones. SMT reporter recommends taking photos in this part of the exhibit because the place is so alive with its twinkling lights.
The second section of TeamLab World is ‘Future Park’, which consists of art attractions that invite visitors to touch, play, explore, and learn from the artwork. In here, you can experience collaborative activities. One of the subdivisions in Future Park is ‘Sketch Aquarium’. Here visitors are given the opportunity to draw and design sea animals. Once a sketch is complete, the drawing is scanned and its digital image is recreated in a digital aquarium. The drawings become digitally alive and can be seen swimming inside the aquarium. This SMT reporter was able to see various unique animals designed by various people. Another subdivision in Future Park is ‘A Table Where Little People Live’. In this area, visitors encounter a table with digital images of little people walking around on top of it. Touching the table, the little people jump onto your fingers. Also, at times, there is a digital rainfall and if you place your hand above the little people, they will flock under it to avoid getting wet.
Place that Heals Stress
Besides the above mentioned areas in ‘Art World’ and ‘Future Park’, there are plenty more exhibits guaranteed to fascinate every individual. The other exhibit areas are just as relaxing as well. Anyone seeking an escape from the stress of everyday life should visit TeamLab World. It takes every visitor back to the stress free days of their innocent childhood. SMT reporter strongly recommends Sookmyungians visit TeamLab World before exam week in order to relax and get in the right state of mind for exams.
